Jekyll & Hyde watches pick up on the duality of personality explored by Robert L. Stevenson more than a century ago. In each of us, two natures are at war – the good and the evil, the ordinary and extraordinary, the genius and the ignorant, etc. All our lives the fight goes on between them, but on our wrist we can express who and what we want to be.
Jekyll & Hyde watches are bold and provocative. The watch cases and dials are modeled on Victorian era pocket watches. Unexpected and shocking features such as bloodied or cracked dials set against modern, colorful hands create a constant reminder that at any time we may transform and unleash the beast.
Robert L.Stevenson’s novel “The strange case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde” was written towards the end of Queen Victoria’s reign over the British Empire. The Victorian era is widely regarded as one of the most prosperous and peaceful times in British History. Common sense, scientific reasoning and gentlemanly behavior were the prevailing values of this time. Stephenson explored in his novel the other, sinister side of society in the person of the scientist Dr. Jekyll.
In his laboratory Dr. Jekyll developed a potion in the hope of separating the good from the bad side of his personality. However, his experiment went terribly wrong, as his evil side represented by Mr. Hyde gradually took over. The novel suggests that we are all just primitive beings, and only the flimsiest of bonds to civilization and morality prevent us from transforming.
